The book is mostly set in the current time and is located in a fictitious suburb of San Diego called Sycamore Grove. Many sites are described; the high school they all attend, the homes of the main characters, and the karate studio are all key locations. These are described in further detail in the book but are all fictitious locations.

The Garden
It is the site outside the Gates of Heaven where all souls arrive and stay while they acclimate to their new reality. Some stay, some move on through the gates, some are returned to earth for various reasons.
Spaera (Spaerae)
Various realms that are accessible by the Viatores. These are the key to the Viatores abilities and their connection to the spiritual world. Different Viatores have access to different ones of these powerful orbs.
Gadsden Hotel
Based on the Gadsden Hotel in Douglas, Arizona. My husband and I visited this incredible old hotel for an anniversary trip several years ago. It was a delightful place to stay and I hope I captured the charm and historical significance of the location.
Agua Prieta, Mexico
Located across the US border from Douglas, its sister city in the state of Sonora, Mexico.
